Ready to Get Your Foot in the Door?

As a digital marketer, social media manager, and designer, I wear many hats. But one thing remains constant: the need to constantly push my creative boundaries and stay ahead of the curve. That's where spec ads come in.

For the uninitiated, spec ads (short for speculative advertisements) are ads you create for a brand without being commissioned. You essentially put yourself in the shoes of their marketing team and brainstorm a campaign that aligns with their brand identity.

"Why invest time and effort for something I might not get paid for?" Here's the thing: spec ads offer a plethora of benefits that can supercharge your career.

Building a Stellar Portfolio: Let's face it, client projects can be restrictive. Spec ads, on the other hand, unleash your creativity. You get to experiment with different styles, messaging, and formats, showcasing your versatility to potential employers. They're a fantastic way to fill any gaps in your portfolio, especially when you're starting out.

Sharpening Your Creative Edge: Regularly flexing your creative muscles keeps them strong and supple. Spec ads push you to think outside the box, develop fresh ideas, and stay on top of current trends. This continuous sharpening translates into brilliant work on future client projects. Landing on Brand Radar: There's always a chance your spec ad could catch the eye of the brand you created it for. They might be impressed enough to reach out for a future project, or even offer you a freelance gig. It's a fantastic way to get your name noticed by the brands you admire. The Power of Community: The good news is, you don't have to embark on this spec ad adventure alone. There are fantastic online communities like The Briefcase Club ([The Briefcase Club ON LinkedIn linkedin.com] & [The Briefcase Club ON Instagram instagram.com]) that provide weekly creative briefs, encouraging designers and marketers to create ads and posters. They even offer rewards for the winners, adding a dash of friendly competition to the mix.

I saw a fun challenge from The Briefcase Club: a Christmas ad, but with Santa as the target audience! I love Cult.fit's mission, so I created a playful advertisement highlighting how they could help Santa stay fit. I sent it to a media agency's founder, and it landed me an internship!
